The KPK’s plan to apply the death penalty or at least life imprisonment in the social
assistance corruption case of former Minister of Social Affairs Juliari Batubara is only a
discourse.
The Corruption Eradication Commission only charged Juliari Batubara with 11 years in
prison and asked them to pay a fine of Rp 14.5 billion in restitution instead of 2 years in
prison and revocation of political rights for 4 years after serving the main sentence even
though this black bull party politician was charged with receiving bribes worth Rp 32.4
billion from several vendors in 2020.
This is in the spotlight because the public waits for KPK’s assertiveness in the case of
social assistance. In this regard, KPK Chairman Firli Bahuri stated that he would take
firm action against corruption perpetrators amid the pandemic and emphasized the
threat of the death penalty.
