Chinese New Year is the most important event for ethnic Chinese. This New Year
celebration is based on the Chinese calendar or the lunisolar calendar, which is formed
by combining the lunar calendar with the solar calendar. The culture associated with
Chinese New Year celebrations varies, depending on the region. Chinese New Year
during the New Order was celebrated secretly because the New Order regime still
referred to Presidential Instruction (Inpres) number 14 of 1967 concerning religious
beliefs and Chinese customs. Still, the deep-rooted culture could not be eliminated.
Ultimately, Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur revoked Presidential Instruction No.
14/1967 by issuing Presidential Decree No. 6/2000.
